Program overview

The Diploma of Photoimaging/Bachelor of Arts program gives you the opportunity to combine skills in photography with one or more of the specialisations available through the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

The photography portion of the program is delivered by Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE (SCIT), where you will utilise the latest imagery software and develop a practical skills base. The Bachelor of Arts component of the program is delivered by USC and offers the opportunity to develop additional knowledge and skills in your chosen specialisation.

With this program, you have the flexibility to design a degree to suit your own interests and career ambitions. Study in photography may be combined with art and design, or one of 16 other major study areas, including journalism, public relations, communication studies, languages, sociology and Australian and cultural studies.

Career opportunities

Knowledge and skills acquired through the Diploma of Photoimaging/Bachelor of Arts are transferable across many sectors such as government, education, arts, media, commerce and industry. Opportunities may include computer graphics, graphic design, heritage industry, journalism, marketing, media, photography, photojournalism, professional writing, public relations, and publishing.

There are different teaching modes between the SCIT Diploma modules and the University's Bachelor of Arts courses. Diploma modules are face-to-face teaching with performance based assessment. The University's Bachelor of Arts courses have 3 or 4 hours of contact per course per week, generally in the mode of a 1 hour lecture and 2 hour tutorial, with students completing a further 6-7 hours of self-directed learning per course per week. The self-directed learning consists of readings, research, assignments and other assessment items.

Program structure

This program is an articulation between the Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE and the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE (SCIT)

Students study the Diploma of Photoimaging at SCIT and USC will award credit for the Diploma equivalent to 12 courses towards the Bachelor of Arts at USC.

University of the Sunshine Coast (USC)

Students complete 12 courses at USC, as follows.

Program requirements and notes

1. No more than 10 introductory level courses are to be completed, including core courses and courses credited for study at SCIT.
2. Chosen introductory courses may count towards the major.
3. No course may be counted towards more than one major or minor.
4. An introductory level course has a number less than 200 in its course code. An advanced level course has a number greater than 200 and less than 400 in its course code.
