Master of Teaching (Secondary)

This program is for graduates with non-Education bachelor degrees wanting to qualify to teach disciplines in secondary schools. For admission, your bachelor degree disciplines must align with the current subject offerings of Queensland schools.

In this program you will:

  • Build on existing subject knowledge with discipline-specific courses preparing you for the classroom
  • Assess students’ learning needs, design lesson plans and manage a diverse classroom
  • Complete Supervised Professional Experience in three blocks, totalling 60 days of practice teaching, with opportunity to gain experience rurally and remotely
  • Attend ongoing professional development seminars and employment forums

Adjusted ATARs are a calculation of a student's ATAR + eligible adjustment factors and are used to determine admission. The raw ATAR is the student's rank before any adjustments are applied.

Completion of a non-education Bachelor's degree (AQF Level 7), or equivalent, with a minimum GPA of 4.0 from a recognised tertiary institution. Applicants must also satisfy the discipline study requirements of at least six courses (approx. 12 credit points each) in a nominated first teaching area and four courses (approx. 12 credit points each) in a nominated second teaching area. Teaching Area One and Teaching Area Two need to be from contrasting subject areas or different discipline areas and contain no more than 2 introductory courses in each area.

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) program at UniSC offers the following teaching areas: English, Geography, Mathematics (only one teaching area), Physical Education or Health or a combination of both (only one teaching area), History (only one teaching area), Science (up to two teaching areas; may include Agricultural Science, Biology, Chemistry, Marine Science, Physics, Psychology, Earth and Environmental Science), Arts (up to two teaching areas; may include Drama, Dance, Film Television and New Media, Music, Visual Arts), Technologies# (only one teaching area; may include Design#, Digital Solutions# or #ICT), Business# (only teaching area, may also include Accounting#, Economics#, or Legal Studies#), Languages# (only one teaching area, may include Chinese#, French#, German#, Indonesian#, Italian#, Japanese#, or Spanish#).

#The following teaching areas are not available at UniSC Moreton Bay: Accounting, Business, Chinese, Design, Digital Solutions, Economics, French, German, ICT, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Legal Studies and Spanish.

English language requirements

You will also need to meet the English language requirements for this program. If you do not meet the minimum requirements, you may be able to enrol in our English Language Programs to reach the required level for most of UniSC’s programs (exceptions apply to non-standard English requirement programs).

Post admission requirements

Students must complete a minimum of 60 days of Supervised Professional Experience in a school setting under the supervision of a Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) registered teacher.

Obtain a Blue Card before starting supervised professional experience. In order to commence field experience placement within this program, students must undergo a Working with Children Check: As required by the Commission for Children and Young People and Child Guardian Act (2000), pre-service teachers must undergo a criminal history check and be issued with a Suitability Card (Blue Card) by the Commission to allow them to undertake field experience in a school or centre in which children under 18 years of age are present. It is highly recommended that students be proactive in applying for a card as soon as they are accepted into the program. It is now a requirement of all Queensland sites and most Australian sites that pre-service teachers have obtained the Blue Card prior to starting professional learning.

Travel and Transport to Supervised Professional Experience sites. An appropriate distance for a Supervised Professional Experience (SPE) placement is normally within 50kms of a student's home residence. Students may be required to attend a placement at a site which is not easily accessible by public transport. Students will need to make their own arrangements to allow for their participation in the allocated SPE placement.

Students will also need to successfully complete the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education students. Further information on the test, including sample test questions and registration information, please visit the Australian Council of Educational Research website.

Additional entry information

Applicants from a non-English speaking background must attain an IELTS score of at least 7.5 with a minimum of 8.0 in speaking and listening and 7.0 in all other subtests. Refer to English language requirements

Additional student costs

Students will be expected to purchase relevant textbooks in hard or electronic version, computer software and access online material to support their learning. This will require suitable computer hardware, software and the internet access to engage within course materials, professional experience and assessment through the use of personal devices or university provided equipment. Students will be expected to wear appropriate, professional dress and to fund travel and accommodation when undertaking supervised professional experience and other on campus activities related to the profession. In preparation for QCT Teacher Accreditation, students are to undertake the LANTITE tests and are expected to bear the costs of these tests.

  • Completing this program within the specified two year (full-time) duration is based on studying 48 unit points per semester (normally 4 courses) and following the recommended study sequence
  • The unit value of all courses is 12 units unless otherwise specified
  • It is each students responsibility to enrol correctly according to your course requisites, program rules and requirements and be aware of the academic calendar dates
  • Courses within this program are assessed using a variety of assessment methods including essays, seminar presentations, reports and in-class tests. Not all courses will necessarily include all methods
  • Only a full-time study option is available to international students on a Student Visa

WIL notes

To commence supervised professional experience (SPE) you must:

  • Obtain a Blue Card (or link your existing Blue Card to USC) prior to commencing supervised professional experience. Applications should be submitted at least 12 weeks prior to the SPE start date. View the Blue Card Fact Sheet for further information. Note: students who do not possess a valid Blue Card will be unable to complete the field education component of their program and will be unable to meet graduation requirements.
  • Complete PrePlace and a Student Placement Agreement (further information will be provided by the placement office upon enrolment)
  • Make provision for transport to attend teaching practice placements
  • Visit Education - Supervised Professional Experience (SPE) for more information regarding requirements for placements
  • It is no longer a requirement that students in Master of Teaching (Secondary) are fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

    Please note that some placement host organisations have chosen to continue requiring COVID-19 vaccination. If you are not fully vaccinated, it is important to know that placement opportunities in your program may be limited and may result in a delay to your placement.

    UniSC still strongly recommends that all students undertaking placement are fully vaccinated and provide evidence of this vaccination status to the University.

Commonwealth supported places

Commonwealth supported places are substantially subsidised by the Australian Government so that students only pay 'student contribution" amounts. The student contribution amount will vary depending on the course you are studying and how much funding the Government provides.

If you accept a Commonwealth supported place you are a Commonwealth supported student. As a Commonwealth supported student you must make a contribution towards the cost of your education (unless you are enrolled in Enabling or Tertiary Preparation Pathway courses) with the majority of the cost met by the Commonwealth Government.

Commonwealth supported places are only available to domestic students. As a domestic student you are entitled to a Commonwealth supported place in an eligible program if you:

  • meet the citizenship and residency requirements
  • complete an electronic Commonwealth Assistance Form (eCAF)
  • meet the University's entry requirements for your chosen program.

International fee-paying places

Annual tuition fees are based on 2025 rates and the equivalent full-time student load as per the recommended study sequence in the relevant program.

Actual fees payable are based on the actual enrolment load in a teaching period (excluding Study Abroad and Postgraduate Qualifying Pathway).

All prices quoted are in Australian Dollars (A$).

Fee-paying places

A fee-paying place is not covered by any government subsidy, and you are required to pay the full cost of the courses you are studying.

If you accept a fee-paying place, you can defer the cost of your studies via a FEE-HELP loan. Eligibility for a FEE-HELP loan is the same as for a Commonwealth-supported place. You must:

  • meet the citizenship and residency requirements
  • complete an electronic Commonwealth Assistance Form (eCAF)
  • meet the University's entry requirements for your chosen program.

UniSC's Master of Teaching (Secondary) program has been included as part of the Queensland Government's Turn to Teaching Internship Program (TTT Program).
