Goal 3: Good health and well-being

Mental health support. Provide staff with access to mental health support.

UniSC is committed to supporting the mental health and well-being of its staff through a variety of initiatives and resources. One of the key components is the mental health training provided by UniSC’s Thompson Institute, which offers workshops and programs designed to enhance mental well-being in the workplace. These workshops cover essential topics such as stress management, communication skills for supporting distressed individuals, and suicide intervention training. For example, the “safeTALK” workshop equips staff with the skills to identify and support individuals who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts.

In addition to training, UniSC provides access to confidential counselling services for staff members. These services are designed to help employees manage personal and professional challenges that may impact their mental health. Staff can access these services to discuss issues such as work-related stress, anxiety, and other mental health concerns. For instance, an employee feeling overwhelmed by workload pressures can seek counselling to develop coping strategies and receive emotional support.

UniSC also promotes a culture of mental well-being through various health and wellness programs. These programs include initiatives like mindfulness sessions, physical fitness activities, and workshops on maintaining a healthy work-life balance. By encouraging staff to participate in these activities, UniSC aims to create a supportive and healthy work environment. For example, regular mindfulness sessions can help staff reduce stress and improve focus, contributing to overall mental well-being.

Furthermore, UniSC recognizes the importance of creating a supportive community for its staff. The university fosters an inclusive environment where employees feel valued and supported. This includes providing resources and support for those who may be experiencing mental health challenges, as well as promoting open communication about mental health issues. For instance, UniSC’s “Let’s Talk” workshop helps staff learn how to effectively support colleagues who may be struggling, ensuring that everyone has access to the help they need.
