The Cave2 and Geomatics

A student-led approach to explore and implement immersive-visualisation experiences and design pedagogies across urban planning program and programs with geospatial minor Geospatial minor courses

  1. An Introduction to geographical information science and technology
  2. Earth Observation: Remote Sensing and Surveying
  3. Applied Geospatial Analysis
  4. Geo-visualisation

All four courses have one CAVE2 session of 110 minutes. Representing information from 3d spherical (more precisely ellipsoidal) earth surface on a 2d surface as a paper for desktop map is the pre-requisite for any interaction with spatial information. Such representation from 3d surface to 2d surface involve complex mathematical transformations, assumptions, and limitations.

For a better utilisation of spatial information, especially with digital user-friendly tools, the users must understand underlying assumptions and limitations of the representation. To understand these complexities, one has to understand models used for describing shape of the earth, such models are referred as datum types. The next step is to understand spherical/spheroidal coordinates system used for describing locations on the 3d surface using the combination of latitude and longitude. The final step to understand various transformations to transfer information from the 3d surface to a 2d surface with Cartesian coordinate system using different types of map projections. CAVE2 artefacts are used to clarify the above-mentioned representations.
