This accelerated biomedical science program allows you to complete in just two years and is designed for outstanding school leavers.

You’ll complete a three-year Bachelor of Biomedical Science degree in two years through a combination of increased load in semesters and studies during the summer teaching periods. You will graduate with a program name that recognises your overall achievement in having completed a higher than normal course workload in two years. This accelerated program enables you the opportunity for early entry into either medical research through the BSc (Hons) program or postgraduate studies in medicine, dentistry and other health areas such as pharmacy, physiotherapy and medical imaging.

In this program, you’ll gain a comprehensive understanding of how the human body works and what happens when diseases, infections and clinical disorders occur. You’ll develop the knowledge and skills for working in applied biomedical industries and medical research.

In your first year of study, you’ll develop generic analytic and communication skills, providing a strong foundation for more specialised studies in biomedical science. You’ll study foundations in medical science, cell biology, general and organic chemistry, human physiology and anatomy, and science research methods.

You’ll then develop skills and competencies in areas integral to the biomedical sciences including physiology, pathophysiology, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, immunology and pharmacology.

You can also pursue your interests and hone your career opportunities by studying elective courses in clinical areas such as medical genetics, biochemical pharmacology, biotechnology, medical microbiology, clinical embryology, and clinical trials coordination.

This program gives you the opportunity to link with industry and develop a specific interest in biomedical science by undertaking clinical work placements and special research projects. Placements may be in areas such as hospitals, clinical trial centres, IVF clinics, pharmaceutical companies and medical research institutes.

This program provides you with a strong base if you’d like to undertake postgraduate studies in professional areas such as medicine, dentistry, pharmacy or physiotherapy.

High-achieving graduates of this program may enrol in a research Honours degree, which can lead to postgraduate studies (eg. PhD) and to a career as a medical research scientist.

Graduates are highly trained for employment in areas such as biomedical research; biotechnology; clinical measurements; clinical trials management; clinical embryology; communicable disease control; drug registration; pharmaceuticals; and medical microbiology.

Program requirements

In order to graduate you must:

  • Successfully complete 288 units as outlined in the Program Structure
  • Complete no more than 10 introductory (100 coded) courses
Program notes
  • Students must commence the program in Semester 1
  • Students must progress in a full-time mode in accordance with the requirements set out by the BBiomedSc(Accel)  program and complete the program in 2-years
  • Students will be transferred to the standard Bachelor of Biomedical Science program if they (1) decide to move to part-time enrolment; (2) are unable to maintain the high course workload associated with the accelerated program; or (3) are unable to maintain a GPA of 5.5 or better each semester.
  • Students will normally enrol in five (5) courses in each semester (60 units), as well as completing addtional courses over Session 8, to enable completion of the BBiomedSc(Accel) program in 2-years. However, students may enrol in up to 72 units on the recommendation of their mentor, and with the approval of the Program Coordinator
  • Where there are exceptional unforeseen circumstances such as in the case of illness, students must apply for special dispensation to the Program Coordinator
  • Most courses are valued at 12 units unless otherwise specified
  • Courses within this program are assessed using a variety of assessment methods which may include essays, seminar presentations, reports, in-class tests and examinations
  • As part of your USC program, you may apply to Study Overseas to undertake courses with an overseas higher education provider
  • Only a full-time study option is available to international students on a Student Visa
