Program overview

The Diploma of Hospitality Management/Bachelor of Business is a dual award program offered jointly by the Sunshine Coast TAFE (SCT) and the University of the Sunshine Coast. The dual award consists of a diploma through SCT and a Bachelor of Business through the University.

In the first year, you undertake studies at SCT’s Mooloolaba campus. These studies form the platform for the next two years at the University’s Sippy Downs campus. In the Bachelor of Business, you will choose from courses in the following specialist areas:


The dual program allows you to graduate with two awards in less time than if you were to study the programs separately. You will gain practical skills and knowledge relevant to careers in a wide variety of hospitality management and business roles.

Teaching mode

There are different teaching modes between the SCT Diploma modules and the University's Bachelor of Business courses. Diploma modules are face-to-face teaching with performance based assessment. The University's Bachelor of Business courses have 3 hours of contact per course per week, generally in the mode of a 1-hour lecture and 2-hour tutorial, with students completing a further 6 hours of self-directed learning per course per week. The self-directed learning consists of readings, research, assignments and other assessment items.

Program structure

Diploma of Hospitality Management

SCT modules required for the Diploma of Hospitality Management award are undertaken at the SCT Mooloolaba campus.

Modules undertaken cover the broad areas of:

  • beverage services
  • building business relationships
  • develop legal and financial knowledge for business compliance
  • food services
  • front office, and housekeeping and cookery
  • gaming
  • hospitality industry practices
  • industry placement undertaken throughout the Diploma
  • supervisory and management skills

Bachelor of Business

Students successfully completing Diplomas at SCT are eligible to apply for advanced standing towards their program at the University of the Sunshine Coast. Advanced standing for the Diploma of Hospitality Management is currently assessed as 8 courses towards a Bachelor of Business program. The 8 courses include:

The recommended structure for the 16 courses, in addition to the 2 core courses and 6 business foundation courses, for a Bachelor of Business is:
