Program overview
Currently large numbers of school students are continuing their education until age 17 due to the new legislation in Queensland that requires students “to learn or earn”. Further the Queensland Studies Authority has redesigned the new Certificate of Education in order to acknowledge a greater diversity of learning pathways for students in the Senior School. This includes a new range of VET options. Thus an increased number of teachers will be required to teach Certificate 1 and 2 qualifications in school settings. Currently there are very few VET trained secondary teachers who are registered to teach in Queensland. This program offers the profession an increased number of graduate teachers who will take up opportunities in schools as VET trained and registered teachers. Further, in the TAFE sector, many existing teachers are looking to upgrade their qualifications and/or become registered teachers in Queensland. This qualification coupled with the Graduate Diploma in Education will meet this need.
Students will be asked to complete three courses. Each course will investigate the confluence of educational research, university teaching and workplace learning. Courses will be offered in face-to-face intensive mode enhanced by a series of online learning modules. Assessment and teaching will be built around the specific learning outcomes, using a flexible approach to cater for the diversity of student needs. Winter and Summer Schools and Intensive Teaching Weekends may be adopted to respond to client needs.
Admission requirements
Students will need to hold a successful undergraduate degree in education, a graduate diploma in education, or equivalent (Nursing, Social Work, Justice Studies) to gain entry into this postgraduate qualification. Applicants may require workplace experience of up to five years.
Students from a non-English speaking background will be required to attain an IELTS level of seven in each category of the test. Equivalent scores from other forms of English language testing will also be considered.
