Program overview

Public relations and information professionals require a broad set of communication skills and a flexible approach to their application in the workplace. Public relations specialists assist business, government and non-profit organisations to develop and maintain mutually beneficial relationships with clients, consumers, media, members, financial donors, employees and other stakeholders.

The Graduate Certificate in Public Relations offers students an opportunity to acquire skills and conceptual understandings in contemporary public relations. Interpersonal skills involving negotiation and the capacity to gain cooperation are an essential foundation for advanced technical and strategic skills in public relations. These include written and oral communication, the design and management of large-scale events, and an understanding of the media industries.

This program is designed for those who have already completed an undergraduate degree or its equivalent in an area different from public relations. It is intended to provide studies in public relations equivalent to those available within the higher levels of a Bachelor degree.

Completion of the Graduate Certificate in Public Relations will not give students accreditation with the Public Relations Institute of Australia (PRIA); however students will be given advice on pathways to gain PRIA recognition.

Admission requirements

A student entering the Graduate Certificate in Public Relations program will be required to hold a Bachelor degree from a recognised higher education institution in a discipline other than Public Relations. Entry by non-graduates who have extensive relevant industry experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis by the Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.
