Program overview

The Diploma of Community Welfare Work/Bachelor of Social Science gives you the opportunity to earn a dual qualification, combining practical experience in community work with comprehensive knowledge in social and political theory, social research and public policy.

You gain practical skills as well as an understanding of the social, political, economic and environmental processes that underpin social change and conflict at local, national and global levels. You will study community work, sociology, environmental and planning studies, politics and international relations and undertake a fieldwork placement in a community organisation.

Career opportunities

Knowledge and skills acquired through the Diploma of Community Welfare Work/Bachelor of Social Science can be utilised for careers in government, welfare, education, unions, political parties, lobby groups and environmental groups. Opportunities may include advocacy, community education, community work, industrial relations, local and regional planning, policy analysis, policy development, and social planning.

There are different teaching modes between the SCIT Diploma modules and the University's Bachelor of Social Science courses. Diploma modules are face-to-face teaching with performance based assessment. The University's Bachelor of Social Science courses have 3 or 4 hours of contact per course per week, generally in the mode of a 1 hour lecture and 2 hour tutorial, with students completing a further 6-7 hours of self-directed learning per course per week. The self-directed learning consists of readings, research, assignments and other assessment items.

This program is an articulation between the Cooloola Sunshine Institute of TAFE and the University of the Sunshine Coast.

Sunshine Coast Institute of TAFE (SCIT)

Students study the Diploma of Community Welfare Work at SCIT and USC will award credit for the Diploma as specified below.

12 courses credit:
SCS261 Community Work Placement 1
SCS270 Applications in Social and Community Work
SCS276 Groupwork
5 x introductory level Social and Community Studies courses
4 x advanced level Social and Community Studies courses

Plus exemption from 1 course:
COR110 Innovation Creativity and Entrepreneurship

University of the Sunshine Coast (USC)

Students will complete 12 courses at USC.
