Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) (Honours)

Make things happen. Mechanical engineers design, build and maintain complex machines and mechanical systems from the very small to the very large scale. Learn the finer points of engineering and machine design, fluid mechanics, and production engineering which will enable you to make systems and machinery for diverse industries from transport to medical devices.

In this program you will:

  • Study fundamentals of engineering, including applied maths, physics, statics, and systems design
  • Complete specialist courses in mechanical design, materials, manufacturing, and fluids and heat transfer
  • Understand social, economic and environmental dimensions of engineering, and the importance of sustainable development
  • Develop advanced problem solving, communication and project management skills
  • Specialise in areas such as electrical and electronic engineering, mechatronic engineering, town planning studies and supply chain management

  • Honours

The Bachelor of Engineering (Civil) (Honours) may be awarded with Honours. The class of Honours to be awarded to a student is dependent upon:

    • the percentage results achieved by study or transfer in twelve courses (144 units) as specified in the table below; and
    • the student achieving at least 65% in ENG402 Physics.
    Courses
    MTH203 Science Research Methods
    MEC301 Thermofluids 1
    ENG302 Dynamics 1
    MEC303 Mechanics of Materials
    MEC335 Engineering Materials
    MEC336 Manufacturing Technology
    MEC300 Mechanical Design 1
ENG304 Calculus II and Linear Algebra
    ENG401 Numerical Analysis
    ENG402 Engineering Project Management
    MEC405 Engineering Research Methodology
    MEC400 Engineering Project 1

A student must complete a minimum of 8 courses (96 units) in the table and the research project for an honours grade to be awarded.

The minimum levels of achievement normally required for each class of honours are shown in the following table:

Honours results classification Overall Percentage attained in Specified Courses*
    Honours Class I 80% - 100%
    Honours Class IIA 70% - 79%
    Honours Class IIB 60% - 69%

*The percentage result shall be rounded up if ≥ 0.5 or rounded down if < 0.5.

Study sequences

Entry requirements

For entry into most USC undergraduate degree programs, you need to have completed a minimum level of education similar to successful completion of Australian Year 12 with good grades.

Further studies, for example, a semester or more at college or university, can also be considered for entry and may give you credit transfer towards a degree.

Some examples of upper secondary qualifications and a guide to the minimum grades that USC will consider are listed here. These are minimum requirements and do not guarantee entry. Some programs may require higher grades. Alternative qualifications may also be considered on a case by case basis.

If your qualification (grouped by country) is not listed, send the qualification transcripts with your application form to the International Office for assessment.

English language requirements

You will also need to meet the English language requirements for this program. If you do not meet the minimum requirements, you may be able to enrol in our English Language Programs to reach the required level for most of UniSC’s programs (exceptions apply to non-standard English requirement programs).

Minimum entry threshold

Applicants must meet the minimum ATAR/Rank.

Location ATAR/Rank
Sunshine Coast 60.00
Moreton Bay 60.00

Post admission requirements

Students must complete 60 days of suitable field experience.

Additional entry information

Applicants from a non-English speaking background should refer to the English language requirements for further information.

Exemption for first year Mathematics

High achieving mathematics students can apply for exemptions to introductory mathematics and calculus subjects. However, exempted courses will need to be replaced with engineering relevant courses to fulfil the requirements of the degree. Apply through the School of Engineering.

Maths Methods and/or Specialist Maths; and Physics or Chemistry
Program requirements
In order to graduate you must:
  • Successfully complete 384 units as outlined in the Program Structure
  • Complete a minimum of 60 days of suitable work experience. Students must meet all costs associated with the acquisition of practical experience to satisfy this requirement
  • The acceptability or otherwise of employment experience, and the period of that type of experience that may be credited towards the 60 days, will be determined by the Program Coordinator.
  • In nearly all cases students find and obtain the required experience as part of paid vacation employment during the summer break.
  • Students complete their work experience programs in an area of their choice, and in the majority of cases they do so within commuting distance of their residential addresses.
Program notes
  • Completing this program within the specified (full-time) duration is based on studying 48 unit points per semester (normally 4 courses) and following the recommended study sequence
  • The unit value of all courses is 12 units unless otherwise specified
  • It is each students responsibility to enrol correctly according to your course requisites, program rules and requirements and be aware of the academic calendar dates
  • Courses within this program are assessed using a variety of assessment methods including essays, seminar presentations, reports, in-class tests and examinations. Not all courses will necessarily include all methods
  • As part of your UniSC program, you may apply to Study Overseas to undertake courses with an overseas higher education provider
  • Refer to the Managing your progression page for help in understanding your program structure, reviewing your progress and planning remaining courses.
