Whether you are writing a novel, memoir or other piece of writing to a publishable standard, this program will offer you insights into the publishing industry and provide valuable tools to ensure you achieve your goals. Through hands-on, intensive craft and writing workshops, students learn skills in editing, writing and creative practice.

With a smaller, more personalised experience, set on the beautiful Sunshine Coast, USC is the ideal location to reach your potential as an author. You will benefit from a craft refresher course in the first semester and our collaborative learning model will see you working within a close community of writers.

This program provides creative writing students with an alternative postgraduate degree to a research/academic oriented path and can be completed in one year (three trimesters), with the option of online studies.

Career opportunities

Career options include publishing, advertising, creative writing (author), freelance writing and editing, journalism, media research, scriptwriting, teaching, and editing in community organisations or government departments.

Admission requirements

To be considered for admission candidates are required to possess an undergraduate degree, in Creative Writing or related Creative Industries. Admission to the program is also based on a portfolio of creative writing and assessment of the candidate’s degree transcript.

The writing portfolio submitted to support an application should provide examples of the candidate's writing over a range of genres (fiction, non-fiction, letters to the editor, journal entries) to provide the assessment panel with an appreciation of the candidate's written expression. The folio should also include a paragraph about the reasons why (both personal and professional) the candidate wants to undertake this program and what the candidate hopes to achieve from graduating with this qualification. The writing folio should be attached to the application at the time of submission.
