Become a mechanical engineer and qualify for registration with Engineers Australia. **

In partnership with University of Southern Queensland (USQ), this program includes foundation studies in engineering and the sciences, and courses leading to competence in engineering research, engineering design, and operation and management of engineering systems. It offers practical real-world applications of the course materials, and guest lecturers from industry ensure high-level exposure to current engineering professional practice. It also provides the necessary foundation to enter research or coursework-based postgraduate programs.

Studies incorporate many professional skills, such as working in diverse teams, written and oral communication, and managing projects in a sustainable way. Students are encouraged to find suitable vacation work experience to support their studies; and to attend overseas universities to undertake equivalent studies that count towards their program at USC. Students may be awarded with Merit Honours. The class of Merit Honours awarded will be dependent on the students Grade Point Average (GPA) and the result achieved in the Engineering Project courses.

Post-admission requirements

You must complete a minimum of 60 days of suitable work experience.

Career opportunities

Mechanical Engineers find employment in industry sectors such as mining; minerals processing; chemical processing; pharmaceutical; manufacturing; oil and gas; automotive; aviation; aerospace; bulk handling; communications; health; building; electrical power generation and distribution; water and waste; natural gas distribution; road transport; rail transport; shipping; shipbuilding; defence; agriculture; forestry; fishing and food processing.

Professional recognition

Subject to accreditation by Engineers Australia, graduates will be eligible to apply for membership with Engineers Australia (Professional Engineer); Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers, Australia; Board of Professional Engineers of Queensland. **

** Pending professional registration from these bodies.

Enquiries
  • Contact Student Administration for application and admission information.
  • Contact the Faculty of Science, Health, Education and Engineering for program advice.
Program requirements

In order to graduate you must:

  • Undertake via external mode, courses denoted with # at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ).
  • Complete practical courses denoted with @ at the University of Southern Queensland. These courses are graded as a Pass or Fail. There is no fee associated with these courses and they are zero unit value.
These courses are delivered in intensive blocks in Residential School during February and September at the University of Southern Queensland Toowoomba campus. Students may enrol in these courses in Years 2, 3 or 4 of their program.
Students must meet all costs associated with travel and accommodation.
  • Complete a minimum of 60 days of suitable work experience. Students must meet all costs associated with the acquisition of practical experience to satisfy this requirement.
  • Apply to enrol in USQ courses, via the Faculty office on the appropriate form and these applications are to be submitted to USQ prior to their Cross Institutionally closing date.
Program notes
  • Completing this program within the specified (full-time) duration is based on studying 48 unit points per semester (normally 4 courses).
  • Courses within this program are assessed using a variety of assessment methods including essays, seminar presentations, reports, in-class tests and examinations. Not all courses will necessarily include all methods.
  • As part of your USC program, you may apply to participate in the Global Opportunities (GO) Program  to undertake courses with an overseas higher education provider. It is advisable to contact your Program Advisor to discuss timing and course issues.
  • Not available to international students on a Student Visa.
