Civil engineering students learn how to design, construct, operate, maintain and recycle the physical and natural environments.

This program provides you with a broad foundation in engineering and enabling sciences before specialising in either construction or environment and water. Offered in partnership with the University of Southern Queensland (USQ), you develop problem solving, teamwork and communication skills; and technical, business management, and scientific environmental knowledge. You are exposed to current engineering professional practice, with emphasis on the creative nature of engineering and the need and ability to work anywhere in the world.

You must undertake some courses, via external mode, with USQ. Enrolment in these courses may involve travel and attendance at the Toowoomba campus for block intensive practical classes. You must meet all costs associated with travel and accommodation.

Students in the Bachelor of Civil Engineering may be awarded with Merit Honours. The class of Merit Honours awarded will be dependent on the student's Grade Point Average (GPA) and the result achieved in the Engineering Project courses.

Majors

Construction; environment and water.

Post-admission requirements

You must complete a minimum of 60 days of suitable work experience.

Career opportunities

Government agencies, construction companies, engineering consultancies, building industry, water supply authorities, mining industry, research organisations.

Professional recognition

Provisional Accreditation at the level of Professional Engineer has been received from Engineers Australia for this program, full accreditation will be considered after the emergence of the first cohort of graduates.

Graduates may register with Engineers Australia (Professional Engineer); Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers, Australia; Board of Professional Engineers of Queensland. *

* Pending professional registration from these bodies.

Program requirements

In order to graduate you must:

  • Undertake via external mode, courses denoted with # at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ). Enrolment in these courses may involve travel and attendance at the Toowoomba campus for block intensive practical classes. Students must meet all costs associated with travel and accommodation.
  • Complete practical courses listed below, the total hours are dependent on the major undertaken. These courses are graded as a Pass or Fail. There is no fee for these courses and they are zero unit value. These courses are delivered in intensive blocks in February and September at the University of Southern Queensland Toowoomba campus. Students may enrol in these courses in Years 2, 3 or 4 of their program. Students must meet all costs associated with travel and accommodation.
  • Apply to enrol in USQ courses, via the Faculty office, on the appropriate form and submitted to USQ prior to their Cross Institutionally closing date.
  • Select a major in either Construction or Environment and Water .
  • Select a minor from one of the minors as listed below. Students must choose the minor to be studied before the completion of Semester 1, Year 3.
  • Register your selected major and minor with Student Administration.
  • Complete a minimum of 60 days of suitable work experience.  Students must meet all costs associated with the acquisition of practical experience to satisfy this requirement.
  • Students completing USQ courses MUST complete and submit the USQ Cross Institutional Study Application form to the Faculty office in H block for submission to USQ each semester, prior to the USQ cut off date.
Program notes
  • Completing this program within the specified (full-time) duration is based on studying 48 unit points per semester (normally 4 courses).
  • Courses within this program are assessed using a variety of assessment methods including essays, seminar presentations, reports, in-class tests and examinations. Not all courses will necessarily include all methods.
  • As part of your USC program, you may apply to participate in the Global Opportunities (GO) Program to undertake courses with an overseas higher education provider. It is advisable to contact your Program Advisor to discuss timing and course issues.
  • Not available to international students on a Student Visa.
