Highlights
- Gain scientific skills for employment in applied biomedical industries
- A strong base for further studies in medicine, pharmacy, dentistry or veterinary science
- Choose electives from any faculty to diversify knowledge
Gain an understanding of how the human body works and what happens when diseases, infections and clinical disorders occur.
Your study combines traditional biomedical disciplines such as physiology, anatomy, pathophysiology, immunology, and biochemistry, with specific competency-based skills in areas such as pharmacology, nutrition, biotechnology, and microbial diseases. You gain the scientific knowledge and skills to work in applied biomedical industries and biomedical research. The program provides appropriate education for entry into postgraduate medical courses.
Career opportunities
Biomedical research and education, biotechnology, communicable disease control, diagnostic pathology, drug registration, medical sales and pharmaceuticals, medical microbiology.
Professional recognition
Graduates may become members of the Australian Society for Biotechnology; Australian Society for Immunology; Australian Society for Microbiology; Australian Society for Molecular Biology and Biochemistry.
Study Plan
This Study Plan is valid from Study Period 1, 2011.
For students who commenced study in this program prior to Study Period 1, 2011:
- Find the Student Handbook for the semester in which you commenced.
- Select the program in which you are enrolled.
- Either scroll down to the Program Structure, or select the Recommended Enrolment Pattern link.
Program requirements
In order to graduate you must:
- Complete no more than 10 introductory (100 level, not EDU coded or LFS103) courses, including the core courses.
- Complete a minimum of 14 advanced (200 and 300 level) courses, 5 of which must be 300 level science (not EDU coded or NUR221, PAR221, HLT221, NUR231 and PAR231) courses.
Program notes
- Completing this program within the specified (full-time) duration is based on studying 48 unit points per semester (normally 4 courses).
- Courses within this program are assessed using a variety of assessment methods including essays, seminar presentations, reports, in-class tests and examinations. Not all courses will necessarily include all methods.
- As part of your USC program, you may apply to participate in the Global Opportunities (GO) Program to undertake courses within an overseas higher education provider. It is advisable to contact your Program Adviser to discuss timing and course issues.
- Only a full-time study option is available to international students on a Student Visa.
