  • Qualify to work in early childhood settings
  • Increase your employment flexibility
  • Help meet demand for early phase teachers

Extend your teaching skills and increase your employment flexibility.

Gain an understanding of how younger children develop and learn in rich early-years environments. The Graduate Certificate in Early Phase of Learning is a graduate qualification for registered teachers who wish to work in early childhood settings (Prep–Year 3), but are not trained as early childhood teachers. The program provides in-depth knowledge of early learning priorities, research, and policy and practices including literacy and numeracy skills. You must complete four specific early-years courses.

Enhance your understanding of the human growth process in relation to the learning styles and needs of young children. Examine theories and models of English language teaching, and engage in studies of how to teach reading, writing and oral language strategies to children. Investigate the teaching of mathematics using the most current research, and learn to develop effective teaching strategies, assessment and reporting, particularly in the concepts of number, basic operations and measurement.

Admission requirements

Students will need to hold a successful undergraduate degree in Education or a Graduate Diploma in Education.

Note: this certificate alone does not lead to teacher registration. It is for teachers already qualified for registration in Queensland.

Students from a non-English speaking background will be required to attain an IELTS level of 7 in each category of the test. Equivalent scores from other forms of English language testing will also be considered.
