Program overview

The content of this program covers an introduction to basic elements of creative writing in CMN116 , then writing for children and youth in general, and then specialist studies in writing for the illustrated book.

Prospective students will be allowed to pursue further specialist studies in undertaking the production workshop component of the program, which will provide opportunity for one-on-one supervision of a particular youth writing project.

The purpose of the program is to allow interested parties to have the opportunity to specialise in writing for children and young adults in the genre of the illustrated book, the short story and the novel.

Delivery will be by lecture, workshop, tutorial and individual supervision of production workshops.

Admission requirements

A student entering the Graduate Certificate program will normally be required to hold an undergraduate degree, or equivalent, from a recognised higher education institution. Entry by non-graduates who have extensive relevant industry experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis by the Dean, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences.

Program objectives

On completion of this program students should be able to:

  • Appreciate the various genres of prose fiction, appropriate to children and young adults
  • Appreciate the various audiences pertinent to youth writing
  • Appreciate the aesthetics of the illustrated book
  • Read nuances embedded in the illustrated text
  • Write for the illustrated text
  • Write appropriately for the various youth audiences demonstrate proficiency in areas of professional and creative writing

Program requirements and notes

  1. The Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing for Youth is a 48-unit program.
  2. The courses that constitute the Graduate Certificate in Creative Writing for Youth will be existing undergraduate courses and will be assessed in the same way that they are for undergraduate students.  
  3. Refer to the Academic Rules for further information.
  4. Only a full-time study option is available to international students on a Student Visa.
  5. International students need to refer to the University's English language proficiency requirements.
