Program overview

Graduates of this four-year professional program will have specialised sustainability skills that can be applied to engineering, construction, and water management projects.

Subject to Engineers Australia accreditation, graduates of the program will be able to apply for membership of the Institution of Engineers, Australia, and apply for a wide variety of positions inside and outside the engineering profession, both in Australia and overseas.

Courses in the degree guide you towards practical, appropriate solutions to local and global problems involving water and other resources. You will develop excellent problem-solving skills within a team-based environment.

Foundation studies focus on both engineering and the sciences, and include engineering projects, engineering design and water supply and wastewater treatment systems. You will also study the advanced scientific methods that are used to monitor and manage the environment, and there is a strong emphasis on ecologically sustainable development throughout the program.

You will be presented with practical, real-world applications of the course material during the program, and guest lecturers from industry will ensure you have a high level of exposure to current engineering professional practice. You will also be encouraged to undertake suitable vacation work experience to further support your university studies.

External delivery

Please note that some of the required courses in this program will initially be undertaken at the University of Southern Queensland (USQ). Students may be required to travel to the USQ Toowoomba campus to attend block intensive practical classes. Professional recognition

Subject to Engineers Australia accreditation, graduates will be able to apply for membership of the Institution of Engineers, Australia. To qualify for membership, you will be required to complete 12 weeks of work experience in the engineering industry, and submit an Engineering Work Experience Report, prior to the completion of your Bachelor of Engineering (Water and Sustainable Resource Management) degree.

Please note that Engineers Australia’s standard accreditation process includes consultation with graduates from the program, and their employers. Therefore, USC aims to achieve full accreditation of this program during 2012, when the first cohort of graduates has entered the workforce.

Graduates may also join the Association of Professional Engineers, Scientists and Managers Australia (APESMA), or other relevant professional bodies.

# This course will initially be taken via external delivery offered by the University of Southern Queensland. Enrolment in these courses may involve travel and attendance at the Toowoomba campus for block intensive practical classes. Students in the first year of their program will not be required to travel to the Toowoomba campus. In later years of the program, students may be required to travel to Toowoomba twice each year, for a maximum of five days in early February and five days during mid-semester break in September. Students are expected to cover the travel and accommodation costs associated with these intensives themselves.
