Program overview
Currently large numbers of school students are continuing their education until age 17 due to recent legislation in Queensland that requires students "to learn or earn". The new Queensland Certificate of Education is a response to the greater diversity of learning pathways for students in the senior phase of learning, and these include a range of VET options. Thus an increased number of teachers may be required to teach courses leading to Certificate 1 and 2 qualifications in school settings. This program offers an opportunity for registered teachers to gain further qualifications to teach and accredit in VET courses.
At the same time there is a range of VET-accredited courses outside schools, in TAFE and other registered training organisations (RTOs), where the possession of a school-teaching qualification may not be mandatory to accredit students. Professionals in these sectors may choose this course to upgrade their qualifications to prepare and accredit student learning in VET-related courses.
Students will be asked to complete three courses. These will be based on educational research, university teaching and workplace learning, and will be offered in fact-to-face intensive mode enhanced by a series of online learning modules. Assessment and teaching will be built around specific learning outcomes, using a flexible approach to cater for the diversity of student needs. Winter and summer schools, and intensive teaching sessions, may be adopted to respond to client needs. Embedded in the award of the Graduate Certificate is the "Certificate IV in Training and Assessment", the nationally recognised qualification for those delivering VET qualifications in registered training organisations (RTOs).
Admission requirements
To teach in schools, applicants will need to be a registered teacher, and hold a degree in education, or a graduate diploma in education.
For those working in non-school contexts, in areas such as nursing, social work or business and office practices, for example, applicants require possession of a degree to gain entry into the postgraduate qualification, and they may require workplace experience of up to five years. These applicants need to be aware that the award of a Certificate is not a qualification for teacher registration.
Applicants from a non-English speaking background will be required to attain an IELTS level of 6.5 in each category of the test. Equivalent scores from other forms of English language testing may also be considered.
