Program overview

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is designed to equip graduates with the essential skills and competencies in management and business administration that are essential for those who aspire to reach the top of their profession.

The MBA, consisting of 12 courses, is built from the four-course Graduate Certificate in Business Administration and the eight-course Graduate Diploma in Business Administration resulting in a comprehensive qualification.

Courses in the MBA cover accounting, economics, management, finance, law and marketing. Many of these courses incorporate case studies of problems encountered in workplaces and industries.

Flexible study modes – online, on campus, or multi-modal

The MBA gives you the flexibility to change study modes during your study. For example, if you're studying on campus and find that you're getting busier at work, you have the ability to swap to the online program. You can then tailor your study around your work commitments.

Admission requirements

A Bachelor's degree from a recognised higher education institution and a minimum of three years' work experience are the requirements for entering the Master of Business Administration program.

Applications are also invited from candidates who do not have a degree but who have work experience of, or approaching managerial level for, six years or more. These applications will receive special consideration from the Dean of Business, who has the discretion to waive the educational requirement if it is considered the candidate is likely to be successful at postgraduate study and would benefit from the program.

Applicants whose first language is other than English must demonstrate an appropriate level of English proficiency by providing evidence of one of the required qualifications.

Advanced standing

Students with an undergraduate degree

No advanced standing will be granted to students with an undergraduate qualification.

However, students who have completed two or more courses on a single topic may be able to substitute that same MBA course for another. For example, if a student has completed a major in Accounting, they can replace Accounting for Managers with a course from the Master of Financial Planning or similar.

Students with postgraduate qualifications

Students who have completed postgraduate subjects elsewhere may apply for one course of advanced standing up to a maximum of 50 percent for the Master of Business Administration, Graduate Certificate in Business Administration and the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration. The content of the courses would need to overlap the University of the Sunshine Coast course content by at least 70 percent.

Program structure

The courses in the MBA program are grouped into three clear parts, or stages, that must be completed in a set order as a student progresses through their Masters studies, thus allowing the courses in each part to build on knowledge gained in earlier parts.
