NEW STUDENTS: Choosing Courses for 2006

Program Overview

A combined education program opens the door to a wide range of study and career possibilities.

The education component of the combined degree will provide opportunities to develop professional knowledge and practice through courses on campus and at a variety of school and other educational sites. The arts component of the degree will allow students to develop a background in chosen disciplines to support curriculum and co-curriculum studies related to teaching in secondary schools. Students will normally undertake studies in two teaching areas.

Professional Membership

Graduates are eligible to be registered with the Queensland College of Teachers. Registration is a requirement to teach in Queensland schools. A range of other general and discipline-specific memberships is also available to graduates of these programs.

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Courses

Select a major teaching area (8 courses) from 1 of the following:

Plus select a minor teaching area (4 courses) from 1 of the following:
- Civics
- English
- Mathematics
- Science
- Studies of Society and Environment

Plus select 4 elective courses (Students completing a minor in Mathematics or Science must select four elective courses from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences)
Note: In some cases students may be able to complete a second minor teaching area or convert their first minor to another major teaching area.

Course Substitution: The GO (Global Opportunities) Program

As part of their USC program, students may apply to participate in the GO Program to undertake courses with an overseas higher education provider

Program Requirements and Notes

  1. No courses may normally be counted towards more than one major or minor within each Faculty.
  2. A maximum of five introductory level courses can be included in the 16 Arts and Social Sciences courses in a combined program. Two additional introductory level language courses can be included to bring the total of the introductory Arts and Social Sciences courses in a combined degree to seven introductory level courses.
  3. A maximum of 4 Science courses (48 units) can be included in the Bachelor of Education/Bachelor or Arts.
  4. An introductory level course has a number less than 200 in its course code. An advanced level course has a number greater than 200 and less than 400 in its course code.
  5. Courses credited to a student's academic record through cross-institutional studies or as advanced standing may also count towards majors and minors where those courses are equivalent to courses listed in the relevant major or minor.
