Program Overview

The overall purpose of the Graduate Diploma in Education is to provide its graduates with the professional studies, knowledge and skills, to compliment previous discipline studies achieved through the successful completion of an undergraduate degree. The program will prepare graduates for two teaching areas, in order to teach students in the early, middle and senior phases of learning. The purpose of the program is to develop teachers who draw on discipline knowledge in order to teach within the key learning areas of the New Basics Curriculum frameworks that constitute the curriculum framework in most schools. The program complements existing in-depth discipline knowledge with education studies, curriculum and pedagogical studies and workplace learning experiences.

This program enables students to develop professional knowledge in the following teaching areas: Accounting, Biology, Business, Chemistry, English, Geography, Health, ICT, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Marine Studies, Mathematics, Modern History, Physical Education and Physics. Students may elect to study a minor teaching area in Civics, English, Health, Mathematics, Middle Phase of Learning, Science, Studies of Society and Environment, or Vocation Education Training (VET).

Workplace Learning (WPL) is an integral aspect of this professional studies course reflecting the nexus between practice and theory. In-depth WPL is gained within four workplace learning practice courses for 55 days plus 20 days broader field experiences. The program is attributes focused with multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate the achievement of the professional attributes outlined in the USC Teacher Attribute Framework. The attributes reflect the expectations outlined in the National Framework of Beginning Teacher competencies, the Professional Standards for Teachers (EQ2003) and the University Graduate Attributes.
