Mental health workshop: What to say when they're not okay

Have you ever hesitated to help someone you know is struggling?

A science-backed mental health workshop, offered by the University of the Sunshine Coast at its Gympie campus on Wednesday 10 July, will cover the skills needed to ask the right questions and provide support to encourage people to seek help.

Fraser Coast, Gympie and Noosa residents are invited to register for the free workshop, which will be presented by Community Health Educator Kali Gray from UniSC's Thompson Institute.

Ms Gray said participants could expect to feel more confident about offering support for teenagers, work colleagues, family or friends who might be going through a difficult time.

“Some of the key learning outcomes will be understanding the signs to look out for that someone’s mental health is at risk,” Ms Gray said.

“We will teach how to ask specific questions to confirm your feeling that they are struggling, and how to apply active listening skills – without judgement – and validating their pain, not 'fixing’ their problem.”

The workshop will also cover self-care and how to reach out for support.

Funding is provided by Country to Coast, Queensland, with support from the Australian Government through the Primary Health Network program. This program aims to support communities impacted by floods and severe weather.
