Adam Jurisevic on kicking goals in sport and exercise science

Just a few hours before he was due to sit his final major exam in high school, Adam Jurisevic decided to pull the pin – a decision that caused a bit of animosity on the home front at the time.

“I was supposed to do what was then known as the QCS test but I dropped out of it that morning,” Adam says.

“I actually had a pretty heated discussion about it with my dad – he was really pushing me to go to university, but I just didn’t want to keep studying at that time.

“It’s all good now, though,” Adam grins. “There was a bit of tension in the house at the time but we both know I was always going to follow my own path ”

Adam instead entered the workforce straight from high school, saving money to help set him up financially. But in the back of his mind, he always knew a university pathway was in his future – it needed to be if he wanted to work in the field of sport and rehabilitation.

“Sports have always been a big part of my life – particularly rugby union,” the Sport and Exercise student explains.

“One of the aspects I became interested in through sport was rehabilitation – it's about helping people, particularly athletes, achieve their peak performance or recover from injury.”

That view has only been reinforced during Adam’s work placement with the Peregian Beach College Soccer Academy, where he has been helping develop programs to build strength and mobility for athletes.

“Having placement has really opened my eyes to the possibilities that come with this degree” Adam says. “It’s been a real highlight.”
Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science

Use human movement to help improve health and fitness outcomes, and to prevent common lifestyle diseases.

Sport and Exercise program coordinator Dr Dale Lovell says there are a gamut of directions graduates could take into the workforce.

“Our students have access to a slew of sport, performance, rehabilitation, and nationally accredited sports science laboratory facilities, taught by industry experts who have worked with winning international sporting teams,” Dr Lovell says.

“But exercise science is about more than using human movement to improve athletic performance – it’s used to make life more enjoyable and prevent common lifestyle diseases for everyday people too.

“There are a lot of opportunities out there for students who are interested in this field.”
