Free online and face-to-face workshops across UniSC's campuses will help people build confidence and skills to take on their study and career goals.

The University of the Sunshine Coast’s Equip program is designed for people aged 18 and over considering taking their first steps towards university or TAFE, including those who have not studied formally for some years, or did not finish high school.

The first in a series of workshops will be held at UniSC's Fraser Coast campus on 29 August. Other workshop dates and campus details here.

UniSC Equip coordinator, Peter Lavercombe said it would include information, resources, and support to help people overcome any challenges or fears that may be stopping them from achieving their study and career goals.

“In a no-pressure, supportive environment, they’ll get honest and helpful information about higher education and the support available for them to make confident decisions about future study,” he said.

“As part of this workshop, they’ll hear insights from other students who have been in their shoes and can complete a short, one-on-one consultation with one of our staff to help plan their next steps.”

Participants can complete up to three workshops developed by UniSC and funded by the Federal Government’s Higher Education Participation and Partnerships Program (HEPPP).

“In UniSC Equip’s ‘Define Your Direction’ workshop we use a variety of exercises and resources to help give participants the tools needed to help people define their interests, values and skills to choose their career path,” he said.

“We explore what options they have for further study based on where they are now. And with jobs constantly evolving, they’ll also get a preview of what skills are needed to succeed in a changing workforce.”

In a third ‘Upskill for Study’ workshop, participants will cover the essential skills and resources needed to prepare for further study, including how to research and reference information sources.

“They’ll learn how academic skills can help achieve goals and develop the skills that employers are looking for.”

Follow-up support includes over-the-phone consults and help to link up with services such as UniSC’s Careers and Employment and AccessAbility teams.

As well as running these workshops on its campuses, UniSC can also deliver them to community groups or organisations, free of charge, at other venues.
