A new USC graduate from Deception Bay who took a three-year gap between school and university to perform with the Queensland National Ballet School has leapt into a new role as an occupational therapist.

Samantha Mitchell works at the Margate clinic of Complete Rehab with a multidisciplinary team that also provides allied health services at a Bray Park clinic and in the community.

“I love the diversity of my work,” said Samantha, who graduated this year with a USC Bachelor of Occupational Therapy (Honours) and a University Commendation for an impressive grade point average of 6.25 out of a possible 7.

“Every person I see has a different story and a different journey which makes every day exciting and engaging.

“I work mainly in the community with NDIS participants, looking at home modifications and equipment prescription. I have also started to specialise in hand therapy and am developing my skills in this area.”

The 24-year-old, who graduated from Grace Lutheran College at Rothwell, said she had enjoyed her ballet travels, including performing at the Sydney Opera House where she placed second overall in one of Australia and New Zealand’s biggest dance competitions.

“I then became interested in occupational therapy due to the variety of work that it covers,” she said.

“Highlights of my degree were the lectures and tutorials at Sunshine Coast University Hospital, completing my research paper, and two placements in third and fourth year.

“My USC study helped with both the direct knowledge required for my qualification and also professional skills such as interacting with clients, time management, workload management and addressing concerns.

“I believe these skills are as important as theory for being an occupational therapist.”
