Netballer off to sporting start in USC degree

Millie Winkler of Buderim is hoping to net both sporting and study success when she starts a degree at USC later this month.

Having graduated from Mountain Creek State High School with an OP2, the representative netballer is now preparing for classes in an Occupational Therapy degree at USC’s Sippy Downs campus, which is home to new national netball team Sunshine Coast Lightning.

Millie, 17, who plays for Suncoast Lynx in the Queensland State Netball League, said USC’s sporting programs and facilities had helped “seal the deal” in choosing which university she would attend.

“Being able to do the degree I want in the environment that I want, and at a location so close to home made it the best option for me,” she said. “Knowing that USC was big on sport was a big factor.

“I think that having Lightning based at USC and all the facilities here will open up a lot of opportunities for me because I’d like to keep playing netball throughout my studies.”

Millie said she was looking forward to starting her degree and hoped to eventually build a career in children’s rehabilitation.

“What appealed to me about occupational therapy is that you’re looking at both the physical and mental components of health,” she said.

“I think working as an occupational therapist would be such a rewarding career. It’s such a broad field and you get a lot out of every day.”

USC’s Orientation Week will be held from Monday 20 February before classes begin on Monday 27 February. For more details about applying to study at USC, visit www.usc.edu.au/learn
