Open Day is a Fraser Coast celebration

More than 15 degrees and study programs will be showcased when the University of the Sunshine Coast opens the doors of its Fraser Coast campus to the community and prospective students later this month.

USC Fraser Coast‘s first Open Day on Sunday 18 September will combine a free fun day for people of all ages with interactive activities, giant games, African drumming, face-painting, and giveaways.

USC’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Greg Hill said the Open Day aimed to excite and inspire Fraser Coast residents to celebrate with their local University and at the same time discover the transformative educational opportunities available at USC Fraser Coast.

“Open Day is perfect for school leavers wanting to explore their study options, or those who left school some time ago and are interested in a new career or upgrading their skills,” Professor Hill said.

Aspiring students can talk with lecturers about the programs on offer, including new degrees and first-year courses in Animal Ecology, Science, Tourism and Events, Psychology, Counselling, Social Science, Social Work and Business.

Advisors will be on hand to help match people’s interests and skills with the study programs and provide career planning advice.

Visitors can tour facilities and teaching spaces, and join in hands-on activities in USC’s nursing and science labs and a new Makerspace robotics room.

Future students can gain first-hand insights into campus life by talking with current USC students and find out about the social activities and support services on offer.

Information will be available on alternative paths to university, including USC’s free award-winning bridging program, Tertiary Preparation Pathway.

High school students going into Year 11 and 12 can discover how to work towards a USC degree while still at school by enquiring about the Headstart program.

Open Day will run from 10am-1pm at the USC campus in Old Maryborough Road, Hervey Bay and will include a free sausage sizzle and coffees. Those attending can enter a draw to win an iPad 2 Air and accessories valued at almost $1,000.

As part of the Open Day, information sessions will be held on education; science and animal ecology; nursing and sport sciences; business, accounting and marketing; tourism, leisure and events; human services and social work; psychology and social sciences.
