The city of Gympie has a new superhero under the guise of mild-mannered University of the Sunshine Coast Law student Callum Lee.

The former Cooloola Christian College student has been transformed into a blue and black-suited hero with control over gravity for an innovative campaign to promote USC’s annual Imaginarium and Open Day on Sunday 7 August.

Callum is one of eight students whose superhero makeovers, based on their strengths and interests, are helping highlight the transformative power of education for prospective students.

“The whole transformation process made me realise that we all access so many of these super powers in everyday life to make our career or study goals happen,” Callum said.

“The super power I have is centred on the concept that law is both a tool to lift someone up through empowerment and ground those who stray too far from safety and the law.

“It was a fantastic experience to be selected as a USC Superhero and spend a whole day with designers and editors really getting a feel for how I would portray this superhero and how it matched with me and what I was studying.”

Callum will don his superhero outfit once again for Imaginarium, where community members can find out how their individual strengths might become “super powers” through education. They can also come dressed as superheroes and be part of the Coast’s biggest ever superhero photo.

Callum said he decided to supercharge his career prospects last year by combining a Bachelor of Law with his Commerce degree.

“The University’s School of Law is focused on making practical students who will be lawyers that are useful and not just book smart,” he said. “It’s teaching like this that makes me confident USC Law graduates will be a hot commodity when we graduate.”

Becoming a “superhero” appears to be destiny for Callum, a USC student ambassador and mentor.

“My dad was a policeman so we had a superhero in the family. I’ve been told when I put my glasses on I look like Clark Kent but I always wanted to be Batman,” he said.

USC’s Imaginarium and Open Day will be held at its Sippy Downs campus from 10am to 2pm.
