Murrumba Downs graduate develops design career

Murrumba Downs resident Rowan Newell is embarking on an exciting career in digital design after graduating from the University of the Sunshine Coast this month with a Bachelor of Computer-Based Design.

Rowan, 24, who received his degree at a special ceremony on Thursday 1 October, is now working at the Digital Developer at APRS Media, a Brisbane-based print and online publisher of business and consumer magazines and journals.

“My role involves a wide range of responsibilities, from uploading content for the digital publications to designing and maintaining aspects of websites,” Rowan said.

“I have to analyse the websites’ data to ensure they continually improve and provide the best experience for the user.

“I really enjoy my job as it's a challenging role that ensures I learn something new every day.”

Rowan decided to move to USC for a more personal study experience after starting his degree at a Brisbane university.

The Pine Rivers State High School graduate said his USC lecturers had encouraged him to independently seek out further knowledge on his own topics of interest such as graphic design.

“This has helped me in my work today as my responsibilities cover a wide array of tasks, some of which require skills I have to teach myself,” Rowan said.

“I decided to make the move to the University of the Sunshine Coast because of the relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.

“I felt that the lecturers actually cared about whether I was understanding the content and weren't just trying to teach to a faceless crowd.”

Applications are now open to start studying at USC in 2016. For more information visit the USC website or contact Student Administration on 5430 2890 or email information@usc.edu.au.
