Characterisation of chemicals and materials is a crucial first step in harnessing the opportunities that exist in nature.

Characterisation of natural and man-made materials is the foundation of discovery, knowledge, and innovation. It is crucial at every stage of research translation and impact, providing insight into the chemical, physical and structural properties of small bioactive molecules to the advanced materials that support a range of industries.

We harness the power of advanced techniques across three major facilities aligned with our expertise: separation and structure elucidation (AIF at UniSC), neutron scattering and absorption (ANSTO Sydney), and synchrotron radiation methods (ANSTO Melbourne) to drive research critical in meeting our future societal needs.

About the Smart Computing research cluster

Using state-the-art characterisation techniques at the Advanced Instrumentation Facility (UniSC), a range of neutron scattering (ANSTO Sydney) and synchrotron (ANSTO Melbourne) techniques, researchers unravel the geochemistry of modern environments, localise bioactive natural products, conduct biomolecule (mono)layer analysis, determine alloy clusters and size domains, and analyse bitumen and construction materials.
